about seekhaven

established in 1990...

...Seekhaven provides free, confidential and trauma-informed services to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. Serving Grand, San Juan and Emery Counties in Southeastern Utah, Seekhaven provides a wide range of essential services including client advocacy, emergency shelter, counseling, financial aid, and transition assistance. Seekhaven also collaborates with numerous multidisciplinary teams to ensure trauma-informed, victim centered responses to interpersonal violence in our community. In addition to direct client services, Seekhaven also provides prevention education to our community in an effort to end violence before it starts. Seekhaven fulfills our mission through three vital programs: Outreach Advocacy, Emergency Shelter, and Prevention Education.

using a prevention lens

All of Seekhaven’s efforts, including direct client services and crisis intervention, are done with a prevention lens. Direct services can be considered tertiary and secondary prevention, in which Seekhaven services soften the impact and maximize the outcomes of those experiencing abuse. Primary prevention instead focuses on eliminating risk factors for injury, with the goal of preventing harm from occurring in the first place.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF OUR SERVICE AREA

Picture
Seekhaven acknowledges the land that we reside on to be the traditional and ancestral lands of the Ute tribe and clans of the ancestral Puebloan people. In 1887, the Ute people of the "Moab Valley" were forcibly removed and relocated to reservations. We also acknowledge the larger region of the "four corners" to be that of the Paiute, Fremont, Hopi, Zuni, and Diné people. We acknowledge that displacement and forced assimilation causes emotional and psychological trauma not only over the lifespan, but across generations and to present day. Importantly, we also acknowledge the diverse and vibrant Indigenous population that continue to live here, and hold gratitude for the thriving cultures and communities that have persisted through colonization.
