A message from Cora, Seekhaven’s Director of Prevention & Education:

Seekhaven is committed to making our community safer. As the community prevention coordinator, I am offering FREE training to outfitters interested in expanding their risk management plan to include workplace harassment. Our bystander intervention program, “Building Your Workplace Toolkit” empowers individuals to step-up and be an active bystander when they witness harassment in the workplace. This training is scenario based and can help facilitate conversations on how to address unwanted behavior from peers and guests in a positive and constructive manner.
This is a great way to bring guides in and discuss expectations at the beginning of the season while also creating space for future discussions. My goal is to provide resources unique to the needs of your organization. You know your organization best and I am here to serve you. Let’s roll up our sleeves and tackle this issue together.
The “Building Your Workplace Toolkit” training program can be delivered virtually or in-person. Availability is limited, reach out to Seekhaven to reserve a time for you and your team today! It’s time we step up and commit to safety, especially when it involves harassment.

REVENGE AND NONCONSENSUAL PORN:
A SEXUAL ABUSE TACTIC IN THE DIGITAL AGE

"Revenge porn is often intended to harass a victim, while any image that is circulated without the agreement of the subject is nonconsensual porn. Both can result in public degradation, social isolation, and professional humiliation for the victim.
...In 2011, soon after Kara Jefts ended her long-distance relationship with a boyfriend who lived in Italy, explicit screenshots from their Skype conversations began to appear online.
...'I’m a good person and I didn’t do anything wrong,' she says. 'There’s nothing wrong with sharing nude images with someone I trust, so something needs to be done about this.'"

Read more about Kara Jeft's experience and current barriers to survivors of nonconsensual porn in this Time article.

VULNERABILITY ISN'T WEAKNESS, IT IS OUR MOST ACCURATE MEASUREMENT OF COURAGE

"Shame is an unspoken epidemic, the secret behind many forms of broken behavior. Brené Brown, whose earlier talk on vulnerability became a viral hit, explores what can happen when people confront their shame head-on. Her own humor, humanity and vulnerability shine through every word."

Unfortunately, many survivors experience shame. This can mean that feel like they cannot talk about their experiences or that people will think poorly of them after they share their story. Interrupting the shame-cycle can be a long journey, but it is possible. Working with a mental health counselor is a great way to start!

THE HISTORY OF THE RAPE KIT

" The kit is one of the most powerful tools ever invented to bring criminals to justice. And yet, you’ve never heard of Marty Goddard. In many ways she and her invention shared the same fate. They were enormously important and consistently overlooked."
This is the story of the woman who forced the police to start treating sexual assault like a crime.
Read more about Marty Goddard, the invention of the rape-kit and the improvement in sexual assault investigation protocols in this New York Times Article.

INTERSECTIONALITY AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Picture
“Intersectionality is a lens through which you can see where power comes and collides, where it interlocks and intersects. It’s not simply that there’s a race problem here, a gender problem there, and a class or LBGTQ problem there. Many times that framework erases what happens to people who are subject to all of these things.” - Kimberlé Crenshaw

Seekhaven understands that marginalized individuals are targeted with violence and are sometimes in greater need for support and services. We aim to be informed and practice cultural humility, understanding our clients come from many different backgrounds and experiences.

TRAUMA AND THE BRAIN

Check out this video to see how traumatic experiences can impact how a human brain operates. Many victims of domestic violence and sexual assault can face incredible obstacles in common tasks due to the trauma they experience.

At Seekhaven, we provide "trauma-informed" services, understanding that our clients are facing many unseen obstacles due to trauma. We meet our clients where they are at!
